"Ayaka Nakamura's 10,000-step treasure hunt" is a segment where CBC reporter Ayaka Nakamura walks around and investigates the hidden charms of notable areas in the Tokai region.

This time, we will introduce three impressive spots: people, gourmet food, and outing spots found in Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture, where Kabaddi is scheduled to be held at the "20th Asian Games" from September 2026.

Impressive Spot ①: Authentic "Cuban Sandwich" with a focus on both the interior and taste

The investigation started from Oike Park, a famous spot in Tokai City. Inside the park, there is a small zoo where you can see deer, peacocks, and other birds up close, which can be enjoyed for free.

After admiring the animals, we left the park and walked, discovering a stylish building.

The first impressive spot is a delicious Cuban sandwich shop, a first-time experience for Nakamura, found after 2841 steps. "JAMMIN’ STANDHOUSE" has an interior unified with carefully selected furnishings.

"It feels like I'm expanding on things I like, and I'm a shop that offers Cuban sandwiches, which are hot sandwiches originating from Miami, America."

The owner, who saw Cuban sandwiches in a movie and wanted to make them, traveled all the way to America to experience the authentic taste. Furthermore, he quit his corporate job and opened the shop in January 2025, wanting to spread this taste in Tokai City.

Although there are various theories, Cuban sandwiches are sandwiches spread by Cuban immigrants in America. It's a dish made by sandwiching slow-cooked roast pork with cheese and pickles in bread, then buttering and grilling it until fragrant.

In addition, there's a rare sweet called "Beignet" that the owner found in authentic America. It's a "fried donut" he encountered in New Orleans, America, and Nakamura also savored its gentle, sugar-dusted taste.

Impressive Spot ②: Homemade gelato shop's summer-only fresh strawberry shaved ice

We asked the owner of "JAMMIN’ STANDHOUSE" for recommended spots.

"There are quite a few shops around Otagawa. I've heard there's a gelato shop. (Q: What's the name of the shop?) I forgot, but it's a shop I'm a bit curious about."

Following the information, we walked towards Otagawa and found what seemed to be the shop! The second impressive spot is a gelato shop's summer-only shaved ice, found after 5381 steps.

"Raspberry Pie Gelato Kobo" is famous for its 16 types of homemade gelato, but the summer recommendation is shaved ice. "Ice Strawberry Cake" is a hearty shaved ice topped with strawberries grown in Tokai City, whipped cream, and ice cream. It's eaten with homemade strawberry syrup.

Nakamura was very satisfied with the cool sweets perfect for the hot season.

Impressive Spot ③: Truly learning from the past! A private historical museum & library cafe for a relaxing time

Nakamura, full from the Cuban sandwich and shaved ice, walked to digest and arrived near Owari Yokosuka Station. Continuing further, she discovered the third impressive spot! After 9913 steps, she arrived at a private historical museum & library in the town.

Entering "Onkochishinsho Akinaishiryokan" (Learning from the Past, Business Historical Museum), a retro space spread out before her eyes.

It's a private historical museum of a daily goods wholesale store that has been around since 1887, exuding a nostalgic atmosphere. Walking about 3 more minutes from here, she found "Umineko, a small shop for books and snacks."

"We operate as a private library cafe. Owners rent each bookshelf, place their own books and works, and it's a shop created by everyone. I wanted to create a community space, so I have dagashi (cheap sweets). Many children come to buy dagashi with their homework and eat it while doing their homework here."
